Director of Educational Support

Position Summary

The Director of Educational Support plays an essential role in the day-to-day management of staff who are responsible for program delivery in public schools citywide. The Director of Educational Support has primary responsibility for training, supervising and supporting all Program Coordinators (c. 19). The position includes extensive supervision in the field; program planning, development and implementation; and oversees special projects. As a member of the Program Management Team, the Director of Educational Support helps to plan and coordinate internal professional development as well as external activities for Program Coordinators.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

Supervision:

  • Supervise staff in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Establish performance goals and conduct observations in the field and performance reviews.
  • Carry out program plans and resolve any related problems affecting those goals.
  • Conduct interviews, assist in hiring of new staff and employee orientation.
  • Organize annual work schedules (work assignments, training); manage staff development and preparation of monthly data reports.
  • Responsible for planning and facilitating professional development activities as well as training for new staff.
  • Develop and design new training materials, and revise current materials as needed.
  • Recommend and coordinate program changes based on evaluation and planning outcomes.

Program Management Team:

  • Serve as a member of the Program Management Team.
  • Play a contributing role in local and city-wide Learning Leaders events.
  • Assist Program Management Team in the design and implementation of strategies for improving volunteer retention.
  • Provide information and support to other Program Directors ( Operations, Community Relations, Family Literacy).
  • Provide information to assist with fundraising along with relevant data for program reports and evaluation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • A Master’s or Bachelor’s degree and at least 4 years relevant supervisory experience in Education or related field (training, youth development, volunteerism, parent engagement).
  • Outstanding writing and organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience with NYC Public Schools and bilingual (Spanish a plus).


Program Coordinator

Position Objectives

Support the organization’s overall goals, especially those relating to program quality and expansion, volunteer recruitment and development, and community outreach in District 31 in Staten Island.

Key Areas of Responsibilites

Trainer

  • Recruit, screen, select, train, and support parent and community volunteers to assist in Elementary and Middle School Core Instructional programs in District 31, Staten Island schools.
  • Deliver training on the core curriculum and related topics to instructional and other volunteers in local communities.
  • Deliver specialized trainings such as family literacy, adolescent development, and middle school.
  • Interview and assess potential volunteers and select and determine suitability for volunteer placement.
  • Facilitate the timely and successful placement of volunteers, in conjunction with the school.
  • Provide follow-up training and on-site support throughout the year to volunteers.
  • Partner and provide support for Parent Coordinators and Lead Volunteers throughout the year.
  • Provide training for Parent Coordinators and PA/PTA officers.
  • Observe and provide feedback and resources to volunteers at work.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the development of new and enhanced volunteer training resources and strategies.
  • Work collaboratively with a team of other Program Coordinators to deliver district-wide presentations and training sessions.

Relationship Builder

  • Organize outreach to DOE leaders including Principals, Parent Coordinators, PA/PTAs, and other school/district staff.
  • Schedule presentations on the work of Learning Leaders at District events, faculty and Parent Association meetings.
  • Establish and foster good communication and maintain positive working relationships with volunteers, district staff, Borough Directors, Parent Coordinators, Teachers, Principals and other administrators, and Superintendents.
  • Engage school representatives to participate in recognition and other citywide and borough events, and to participate in yearly surveys.
  • Foster collaborations with appropriate community organizations.

Administrative Tasks

  • Communicate with supervisor regarding monthly field activities.
  • Communicate regularly with school liaison (e.g. Parent Coordinator) about the program and what is needed.
  • Expedite, evaluate and process volunteer applications in conjunction with school staff, Lead volunteers, and program team and MIS staff.
  • Mail certificates, badges, district newsletters, and other information to volunteers.
  • Update volunteer information on a continual basis.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated skill in training and facilitation, workshop development, public speaking and adult learning practices.
  • Related work experience in education, parental involvement, or community organizing.
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to plan and schedule events.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently.

Additional Requirements

  • Applicant must reside or have strong ties to the Staten Island community.
  • Minimum work requirement of 20hrs per week.
  • Applicant must have (or have access to) a car.
  • Ability to do trainings bilingually in Spanish.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field; Masters Degree a plus.
