Learning Leaders in the Bronx
New York, March 2007 - Learning Leaders' Program Coordinators, Monse Santana and Felicia Wilson Ocasio were featured guests on BRONXNET, a community television station serving the borough of the Bronx since 1988. They were interviewed by WBLS Radio personality Bob Lee on the television talk show OPEN. Open is a freeform television program that helps Bronx community organizations share information about issues and services, provide a forum for discussion and debate, edify viewers about what's happening in the Bronx and beyond.
Ms. Wilson Ocasio and Ms. Santana serve Region 2 in the Bronx, School Districts 11 and 12 respectively. They discussed the impact of Learning Leaders on the Bronx public schools as well as throughout the NYC area through training parents and community members to offer academic support to City students. The importance of parental involvement in the schools was stressed as well. Both Program Coordinators work with close to 800 parents in their respective districts, offering family literacy workshops as well as on-going educational support. Many workshops help parents engage their families in at-home activities that promote and inspire increased literacy. Ms. Wilson Ocasio and Ms Santana concluded the interview by reaching-out to the Bronx community to get involved in public schools.
