Trustees Luncheon
As part of the 50th Anniversary celebration, Learning Leaders hosted a trustees' luncheon entitled "From Boots to Books" on Thursday, November 16th at the Cosmopolitan Club. The luncheon honored former members of the Board of Trustees for their commitment and dedication over the years. Mary Heller, an honorary and former trustee, chaired the event; and Seymour Fliegel, President of CEI-PEA, was the special guest speaker. In attendance were many past and current trustees, as well as Helen Acker and Emily Whalen, two of our original volunteers from 1956.
Opening Meeting
Learning Leaders kicked off the school year with the annual Opening Meeting on September 26th at the Marriott Marquis in Manhattan, with nearly 2,000 volunteers in attendance. The event was hosted by Dana Tyler, CBS 2 News Anchor and Learning Leaders Board Member and Chancellor Joel Klein was the keynote speaker. Additional speakers included Iris Weinshall Schumer, Chairman of the Learning Leaders Board of Trustees; Mindy Duitz, President of Learning Leaders; Dennis Walcott, Deputy Mayor for Education and Community Development; Randi Weingarten, President of the United Federation of Teachers; Tony Avella, Councilman for District 19; and Betty Gonzalez-Soto, Principal of P.S. 211, Bronx. Entertainment was provided by the "Singing Sensations" chorus of P.S. 273 in Brooklyn.
