High School Transition

Students have many options when it comes to high school programs in New York City. Some schools require entrance tests, many do not. Recently the Department of Education has created new small secondary schools that offer various curricular programs; most large high schools have several programs in one building. Selecting the "right high school" is very important; students and parents/guardians need to begin early, explore the options, and make informed decisions.

This two-hour interactive workshop is designed to address:

  • the admissions process
  • selecting the "right" high school
  • hints for success in high school
  • tips for parenting high schoolers

Our Impact

Teachers report that, of students who received volunteer help last year,

  • 96% improved in school work
  • 92% improved in self-confidence
  • 89% became more intested in school
  • 27% no longer need extra assistance

Many volunteers, particularly parents, report that giving instructional help to children expands their own educational and career goals.
